Nitric acid is a highly corrosive mineral acid and powerful oxidizing agent produced by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. Ammonia gas is oxidized to nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide by oxygen in the presence of a catalyst. The nitrogen dioxide is absorbed in water to form nitric acid. To achieve higher concentrations, nitric acid is dehydrated by distillation with sulfuric acid. Pure nitric acid is colorless but older samples tend to acquire a yellow cast.

The main industrial application of nitric acid is in the production of fertilizers where it is neutralized with ammonia to give ammonium nitrate and other nitrated organic derivatives. Over 70% of annual global consumption of nitric acid is used in production of fertilizers.

Nitric acid has other important uses which lead to production of necessary products. Adipic acid (the precursor to nylon) is produced industrially by oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclohexanol with nitric acid. Nitric acid is also used for production of explosives and specialty organic compounds among others.

Diluted nitric acid is transported in tanks or drums made of stainless steel and in containers made of polyethylene or polypropylene while concentrated nitric acid is transported by specialized tankers.
