About 90% of phosphoric acid produced in the world is used in the manufacture of phosphates for use as fertilizers followed by use in manufacture of synthetic detergents and the rest is used in animal feed additives, metal treatment, food and drink additives among others.

Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient and is taken up by plant roots. The manufacture of fertilizers that are used to rectify phosphorus deficiencies in soils depends on the availability of supplies of phosphoric acid.

In supply and trading of phosphoric acid, the role of Berium Group is to utilize deep insight required to match surplus production in one area and demand in the other. Berium Group is committed to annual supply of more than 2 million MT of phosphoric acid across the world. By partnering with sulfuric acid producers, we provide them with sulfur feedstock and off-take the manufactured sulfuric acid for delivery to the producers of phosphoric acid.

Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is today produced by 2 main commercial methods: wet process and thermal process. However, wet process is by far the most common method used in phosphate fertilizers production (DAP, MAP, SPA) where fluoroapatite, known as phosphate rock is digested by concentrated (93%) sulfuric acid through a series of reaction resulting in phosphoric acid and calcium sulfate (gypsum) plus other insoluble impurities. Water is added and the gypsum is removed by filtration along with other insoluble materials (e.g. silica). Fluoride, as H2SiF6, is removed at a further stage by evaporation.

Through thermal process, phosphoric acid is of a much higher purity and is used in the manufacture of high grade chemicals, pharmaceuticals, detergents, food products, and other non-fertilizer products.
