More than half of the entire benzene production is processed into ethylbenzene, a precursor to styrene monomer which is widely used to make polymers and plastics. The other important uses of benzene are in the manufacture of cumene, which is required to produce phenol and acetone for resins and adhesives.

Benzene is also used in the production of cyclohexane. While cyclohexane is a common organic solvent, it is mainly used as a reactant in the production of adipic acid, a precursor in the manufacture of nylon. Nylon fibers are processed into textiles and engineering plastics. Pharmaceuticals, rubbers, dyes and synthetic detergents are also among other common products in which benzene is used for production.
