Mixed Xylenes has three isomers – ortho, meta and paraxylene – typically containing 40% to about 60% m-xylene and up to 20% each of o-xylene and p-xylene and in addition, a certain amount of ethylbenzene. Meta-xylene, o-xylene and p-xylene are important industrial chemicals used in various industrial applications.
The major industrial application of meta-xylene is in the production of isophthalic acid. Isophthalic acid is used as a copolymerizing monomer to alter the properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), making PET more suitable for manufacture of plastic bottles for soft drinks.
P-xylene is used in the synthesis of polyester resins and fibres, solvents and pharmaceuticals among others. Ortho-xylene is majorly used in the manufacture of phthalic anhydride which is a principal commercial form of phthalic acid. Subsequently, phthalic acid is primarily used as a chemical intermediate in the production of from vinyl chloride. Phthalate esters, which function as plasticizers are derived from phthalic anhydride.
