ABS is a thermoplastic polymer produced by polymerizing varied proportions of styrene and acrylonitrile monomers in the presence of polybutadiene. Acrylonitrile is a synthetic monomer made from propylene and ammonia while styrene is a monomer produced by dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene and butadiene monomer is produced through steam cracking in processing petroleum.

Variation in the proportion of ABS components yields different properties in end product relative to mechanical properties desirable (heat resistance, rigidity, hardness and toughness). Styrene gives ABS shiny impervious surface while acrylonitrile makes it stronger compared to pure polystyrene. Polybutadiene gives it toughness at low temperatures.
